APE 2013 is over!

 

Alternative Press Expo 2013 is over and went great! Plenty of copies of MONSTROSSUS went into American homes.

Met a lot of talented friendly people and caught up with some friends I didn't know would be showing their art there.

Our table The Illustrium - Will Coyner @WillCoyner, Patrick O'Keefe @TheOKArtist and myself @Auldrobot brought our first books and art prints. Big thanks to everyone who came out and stopped by our table!

some skull

got distracted from my task of painting a thing in a jar and ended up painting a skull on a wall.

Dream of Leviathan

I had a dream of this image about a year ago and finally painted it up. I decided to treat this like a concept for a film shot so I used photo textures like the whale skeleton.

This is the color and light study I did first. Took me about 20 minutes to mock this up and I feel like I had to work the final image for hours just to be as effective as the study. In the end I prefer the final but there are still a lot of great implied details in the quick study.

I was messing with trying to make comics. At the time I hated this but it has grown on me.

I never got around to doing the pages and pages of the robot saying "harm a human" over and over again all night long on the couch..

I am clearly blind. Colors are totally wrong. I used desat red instead of a nice toasty orange, among other things...

I started this aiming to use as few strokes as possible. 10 got me no where so I just freestyle blocked stuff in. I like the result, like painting with a roller.

no time for a full Payne study so I took a snowy Game of Thrones still and did a value study.

Edgar Payne study. Trying not to color pick until I'm done to check how close I get the colors. Not doing well yet but the values are pretty close when desaturated.
